15 Best Things to Do in Maidenhead (Berkshire, England)

In one of the richest boroughs in England, Maidenhead is a market town on the Thames, not far upriver from Windsor.

The Prime Minister Theresa May’s constituency, Maidenhead has a tidy town centre that was redeveloped after the Second World War.

A lot of the town’s charm comes from its riverside, where there’s an epoch-making railway bridge designed by Brunel, an elegant 18th-century road bridge and the picturesque Boulter’s Lock.

There you can get onto Ray Mill’s Island, where there’s a sweet little park with a cafe and playground.

The Thames will be at the heart of your plans in Maidenhead, whether you take boat trips, try water activities, walk the Thames Path or go for days out to Windsor, Cliveden House or nearby Cookham.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Maidenhead:

1. Boulter’s Lock

Boulter's Lock

Boulter’s Lock

One of the prettiest places on the Middle Thames, Boulter’s Lock is moments from Maidenhead town centre.

The lock is the third to be built at this point in the river, dating to 1912 and replacing one from 1772 and an even earlier lock built in the 16th century.

The Boulter is an upmarket pub/restaurant next door, with a balcony overlooking the river.

If you’re wondering how boats navigate the Thames you could pass a few minutes watching the narrowboats and yachts being lifted by the lock.

The weir, moderating the level of the river, is a little way upstream at the north end of Ray Mill Island.

This is a popular white-water kayaking spot in summer, when it has a flume installed for a few months.

2. Ray Mill Island

Ray Mill Island

Ray Mill Island

Cross the bridge at the lock and you’ll be on Ray Mill Island, a charming public park in the middle of the river.

“Ray Mill” comes from a flour mill, constructed on the island in 1726 and demolished in the 1920s.

Since the 50s the island has been owned by the borough and has plenty of facilities in an idyllic setting.

A cafe, Island Piazza, opens during the summer months and you can sip your tea or coffee at a picnic table by the water.

There’s an adventure playground for children aged three to eight, and they’ll also be thrilled with the aviaries and guinea pig pen enclosure.

3. The Sounding Arch

The Sounding Arch

The Sounding Arch

Crossing the Thames in the southeast of the town is a structure of vast historical value.

Designed in the 1830s by the fabled engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Railway, this was the flattest and widest brick arch bridge in the world at the time.

Each arch has a span of 39 metres, but rises only seven metres above the water.

As a testament to Brunel’s ingenuity the bridge is still used by the railway, even though today’s trains are ten times heavier than in Brunel’s day.

The name, Sounding Arch comes from the extraordinary echo created by Brunel’s innovative design.

J. M.W. Turner painted the bridge in the Rain, Steam and Speed – Great Western Railway (1844), one of his best known works.

4. Maidenhead Heritage Centre

Maidenhead Heritage Centre

Maidenhead Heritage Centre

Small but overflowing with interesting things, the Maidenhead Heritage Centre is the town’s museum.

The permanent exhibition has a Roman skeleton buried near Bray in the 5th century, details about the Profumo affair and its connection to Cliveden, and a history of the Vanwall Formula One team that was based in Maidenhead in the 1950s.

There’s an in depth “Story of Maidenhead” to bring you up to speed, covering the town’s boom years in Victorian times and its role as a shooting location for the Hammer Horror films of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

Something out of the ordinary is a Spitfire simulator, letting you to take the controls for flight over the Isle of Wight, Windsor or 21st-century London.

5. Cliveden House

Cliveden House

Cliveden House

One of the National Trust’s most prized houses is just a few minutes up the Thames.

The mansion rests atop an Italianate terrace, 40 metres over the east bank of the river.

It was rebuilt in 1851 by Charles Barry (famous for the Houses of Parliament), and has a mix of Palladian and Cinquecento architecture.

Cliveden was home to Nancy Astor, the UK’s first woman MP, in the 20s and 30s, while John Profumo met Christine Keeler for the first time at a party in 1961. The house is now an exclusive hotel, but the National Trust offers brief tours from March to October, during which you’ll hear anecdotes about guests like Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and the Queen Mother.

In the grounds you can take in the Water Garden, hire a boat to row on the Thames and try to solve the yew maze, composed of more than 1,000 trees.

6. Norden Farm Centre for the Arts

Norden Farm Centre For The Arts

Norden Farm Centre For The Arts

This vibrant live entertainment venue has an unusual location on an old dairy farm.

The ensemble has two listed buildings, an 18th-century long barn and a Georgian farmhouse.

Maidenhead had been planning an arts venue since the 1970s, and finally settled on this site in the 1990s.

Open since 2000, the award-winning Norden Farm Centre for the Arts has a dense programme of comedy, drama, dance and live music, as well as a wide choice of classes and workshops.

These can be as varied as jewellery making, pilates, yoga, and life drawing.

You can also catch film screenings, as well as live broadcasts or recordings from the Royal Opera House or National Theatre.

7. Cookham

Cookham

Cookham

One stop on the train or ten minutes by road, Cookham is a very affluent and picturesque village on the Thames.

For such a small place, Cookham has had some distinguished residents, like Guillermo Marconi, Kenneth Grahame (author of Wind in the Willows) and the 20th-century artist Stanley Spencer.

The latter was born in Cookham, was educated in Maidenhead and died in Cliveden.

Cookham had a special place in his heart, and after his death the former Wesleyan Chapel became a gallery for his works.

The gallery’s collection runs to more than 100 paintings and is rotated in exhibitions.

Spencer himself worshipped at this building as a child, and painted Ecstasy in a Wesleyan Chapel, on the strength of childhood recollections 30 years later.

That painting is now in the collection.

Afterwards, go for a stroll on Cookham Moor, a parcel of countryside criss-crossed by streams and cared for by the National Trust.

8. Dorney Court

Dorney Court

Dorney Court

This early-Tudor manor is open for tours every afternoon in August, as well as during both May Bank Holidays.

The beautiful half-timbered house was built around 1440 and has remained largely the same since 1500. Dorney Court has belonged to the Palmer Family since the 16th century and is still a cheerful family home.

You’ll approach the house via a patch of ancient chestnut and ash woodland, past a pond dug in Medieval times.

The tour will guide you through a series of panelled rooms like the parlour, great chamber and the marvellous vaulted great hall.

You’ll also see priest holes, a cellar, buttery, the pantry, little passageways and the lovely old kitchen.

Some small parts have been updated, like the 17th-century William and Mary dining room and a gaudy bathroom decorated in the 1970s.

There’s a tearoom at the kitchen garden, and a shop selling goodies like golden honey produced at the estate’s aviary.

9. Ockwells Park

Opened to the public in the 1980s, Ockwells Park is on land that used to belong to the Ockwells Manor Estate.

The 15th-century half-timbered manor house can be seen to the west of the park, and was built with oak from Winsor Forest, which at that time extended as far as Maidenhead.

The park has a conservation area labelled with signs about its wildlife.

Depending on your luck and the season, you may see meadow brown butterflies, green woodpeckers, cuckooflowers and common blue damselflies.

Recharge your batteries at Andrea’s Cafe, which has a soft play area for little ones.

10. Thames Path

Thames Path

Thames Path

If you prefer to use your own two feet to get around, many of the attractions on this list, like Cliveden, Cookham and Dorney Court can be reached on the Thames Path.

This is a National Trail, tracking the river for 184 miles, from its source near Cirencester to the Thames Barrier in London.

You could walk to Windsor in half a day, passing Dorney Lake where the 2012 rowing and canoeing events took place.

For people with accommodation in Maidenhead, the walk upriver to Bourne End via Cookham is particularly convenient, as you can return on the train in a couple of minutes.

On the path can look across the water to the Cliveden Estate just before you enter Cookham.

11. Boat Trips

Windsor

Windsor

It’s a super way to visit this royal town, departing Maidenhead Promenade at 11:00 and arriving at Windsor 90 minutes later.

You’ll have more than three hours to potter around the town centre and Great Park, and maybe see the castle.

The return boat sets off at 15:45. The voyage along the Thames is commentated, and will fly by as there’s so much history on the banks.

You’ll see the idyllic village of Boveney, splendid country houses like Oakley Court and the Monkey Island Estate, and of course Windsor Castle and Eton College.

Jubilee Clock Tower

If you’re curious, the tower is 14 metres tall and crowned with ornamental merlons and turrets with tracery.

Go in for a close look at the clock faces and you’ll notice a subtle diamond pattern as a low-key nod to the jubilee.

BCA Zoo

On the shore is Engage Watersports, which offers courses and taster sessions in canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and wake kayaking.

On the lakeshore is the newly opened Lake House Cafe, with a terrace over the water.

Also, a little further out of town is Bray Lake, touted as the top watersports centre in Berkshire and on hand for dinghy sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, kayaking canoeing, open water swimming and fishing.

15. Hitcham Farm Ice Cream

Hitcham Farm Ice Cream

Hitcham Farm Ice Cream

3 Great Reasons To Book An Airport Transfer

WHAT ARE AIRPORT TRANSFERS, ANYWAY?

Booking an Airport Transfer means having your own private shuttle. A professional chauffeur greets you at the airport, with a name sign if you wish, helps you with luggage and drops you off at the doorstep of where you need to be, unless of course it’s in a car-free zone. Amenities include cool new cars, free WiFi, and best of all: if your flight is late (or early, some flights land ahead of schedule, seriously!) then your driver will be waiting whenever the plane lands — no extra charges for you, and no headaches.

VALUE FOR MONEY

CAN I AFFORD AN AIRPORT TRANSFER?

Yes, you can. In fact, the main reason to book an Airport Transfer is affordability. You will probably save a small sum of money if you for example use public transportation instead. However, if you are not a single traveller, then any savings are unlikely. Since transfers are priced per vehicle and not per passenger, a family or any group of travelers will oftentimes find Airport Transfers cheaper than a shuttle bus or the metro.

Factor in airport luggage, pickup times tailored to your needs and the comfort of arriving exactly where you need to be. Do you really need the hassle of public transportation when you travel? Will it make your business trip more productive? Or your leisure trip more enjoyable?

PEACE OF MIND

HOW DOES AN AIRPORT TRANSFER WORK?

In most cases, you need to book in advance. One major reason why our prices are so reasonable is that we are able to plan ahead and send cars and drivers where they are needed. In many cases we will be able to meet an urgent transfer request, however most of our clients book a day or more in advance. For this same reason, we cannot issue refunds if you cancel your transfer last minute, when our vehicle and driver are already committed.
Knowing the price of your transfer ahead of time surely helps to put your mind at ease. This is one major difference between transfers and taxis: with us there are no hidden costs or extra charges, ever.

Our drivers are experienced, licensed professionals. They are friendly and helpful, and your trip with us is fully insured.

FLEXIBILITY

WHAT IF MY TRAVEL SITUATION IS UNUSUAL?

The more complex and unique your situation is, the more you are set to gain from booking a transfer, precisely because the service is so adaptable to your needs. Group travel we mentioned already. We will gladly transfer your pets if they are in carrier crates. Your kids we will transfer even more gladly! Surfboards, golf clubs and ski equipment are a few common types of items we handle on behalf of our clients.

How To Avoid Holdups At The Airport

Whether you are a frequent flyer or a periodic flyer, holdups at the airport can be insufferable. However, while airport holdups are unbearable, they are also mostly self-inflicted. Don’t panic just yet, this is good news; if the hold-ups are self-inflicted, it means they are within our control, right? Our airport transfer service specialists have therefore come up with several pointers that will help you avoid unnecessary holdups in your subsequent airport experiences.
The very first pointer must be the contracting of a concierge car service such as our airport transfer service for all your airport transportation needs. Running late on your way to the airport is usually the first domino in a string of holdups from security, to check in, and all the way to your gate. A reliable car service will consider all the logistics at play, including time of day, traffic density, weather, and so forth, in order to ensure that you are at the airport in time to comfortably and smoothly move through the various checkpoints without much aggravation.
The following are a few more pointers on how you can avoid holdups at the airport.

Be Prepared

Ensure that you have all the necessary documents ready before you get to customs in order to avoid wasting time rummaging through your bags. Also, although you can borrow one from the person next to you in line, you should bring your own pen and keep it at hand in case you need to sign any documents or fill-in any forms.

Liquids and Hand Luggage

If you want to breeze by security, always pre-pack all your liquids (100ml and below) in a transparent zip-lock bag before traveling. Have those, alongside all electronic and metallic devices such as phones, cameras, and laptops, out of your hand luggage before you get to security to minimize the amount of time you spend before clearance.

Headphones/Earphones

Potential mistakes that may lead to further holdups at the airport persist even after you have passed airport security. In most cases, airlines will make important announcements over the PA system, for example, gate changes. If you happen to be wearing your headphones/earphones enjoying a funny YouTube video, you may miss an important announcement and stand a good chance of missing your flight.

Misplaced luggage

Airport holdups can also occur once you have arrived at your destination. Bags and suitcases will sometimes look alike, and you may not be able to differentiate yours from another person’s. To avoid the hassle of having to verify which bag or suitcase is who’s, make an effort to ensure yours stand out. For example, by tying a bright ribbon or pinning a distinctive badge.

Airport Check-ins

One of the biggest airport holdups has to be the check-in queue. Choose to check in online, which is incredibly effortless. In fact, for domestic flights, without luggage, you will be able to walk straight past security, skip the check-in queue, and pick a seat of your choice at the gate before everyone else is done checking in.

The Early Bird Gets The Worm: The Benefits of Booking Early

When it comes to travel, everyone knows that booking early is key to getting the best deal. From hotels to flights, wise travellers book well in advance to reap the rewards of booking early.

Leaving it until the last minute

When hotels and scheduled flights approach capacity, prices begin to climb as demand increases – especially during peak seasons like the summer holidays. As seats are taken up and demand runs high, airlines and hotels stop releasing discounted rates – moving up to their full fares.

With holidays and travel options being booked up to a year in advance, leaving your travel plans to the last minute could leave you facing a hefty fee or even unable to travel due to lack of availability.

The benefits of booking early

With such great travel savings to be made, why stop at your flights and accommodation? Booking early gives you peace of mind, allowing you to know that everything is taken care of and all you have to do is relax and enjoy the journey.

In fact, the benefits of booking early don’t just stop at hotels and airfares. Did you know you could save by booking your airport transfers early? Whether you’re travelling to or from the airport, or making a connection – time is of the essence. By booking a taxi last minute, you’re risking problems like availability and traffic resulting in delays. Unlike many taxi companies, we offer a discount on advanced bookings, giving you even more reason to get your travel planned early. Get a taxi quote on your airport transfers.

Stress Free Airport Transfers

Although flying is by far the most efficient way of travelling long distances, it is not always the most stress-free option: waiting around in long queues, dealing with delays, feeling guilty for no reason at customs and tapping your passport pocket every two minutes – and that is before you even get on the plane! Once onboard; crying babies, noisy eaters, fidgeting partners and talkative strangers can all conspire to make your journey anything but enjoyable.

With all this in mind, it is naturally very important to try and make sure your transfers to and from the airport are as stress-free as possible. After all, waiting around for trains, tubes and buses which will more than likely be delayed and jam-packed might just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

Happily, we can provide you with a specialist airport taxi service that is guaranteed to get you to your destination in a manner which is totally and completely stress-free. Our smooth airport transfers will lighten the load of your luggage and allow you to not only rest yourselves after running the gauntlet at baggage reclaim but also forget all about the hassle and stress of using public transport.

Our airport transfers can make getting to and from busiest airports totally stress-free. So, next time you need picking up or require a taxi to airport, be sure to book your journey with us.

How much will my journey cost?

The Taxicard scheme is subsidised by the London boroughs and the Mayor of London, which means you pay considerably reduced fares. You will pay a flat fare for each journey and your local authority will pay the balance shown in the tables below.

All London taxis have a minimum initial charge of £3.00 on the metremeter when it arrives to pick you up or if you have hailed the taxi in the street

Pricing for Taxicard Journeys

On 1st January 2019 we introduced a maximum fare guarantee. When you make a booking you will be given a maximum fare for that journey based on a price per mile. At the end of the journey, if the fare on the meter is lower than the maximum fare then your contribution will be based on the metered fare. If the fare on the meter is higher, you will be charged the maximum fare given to you when you booked.

The table below shows how much you will pay. The move to a maximum fare guarantee will have a number of customer benefits:

You will know the maximum fare contribution in advance and will not have to worry about this costing more while in the vehicle;

The same journey will always have the same maximum fare contribution no matter what day or time of the day you travel.

As well as delivering more cost certainty that members asked for, we estimate that, on average, most members will make savings because of this change. You may not notice any difference for journeys up to two miles in a taxi where a minimum contribution will still apply. It is possible some longer fixed price trips, even with the subsidy, may be more expensive than a private hire alternative outside of the scheme. If you consider that this could be the case you may wish to make your trip outside of the Taxicard scheme. The provision of a maximum price at the time of booking will at least allow you to make more informed choices about the most cost-effective way to travel.

Taxicard Fares – What you will pay for your journey

The table below shows the maximum that Taxicard members will pay for journeys in taxis depending on the number of miles travelled. There is a fixed maximum rate per mile so you will always know in advance the most you will have to contribute towards the journey. To increase supply a small proportion of journeys are provided by Private Hire Vehicles (PHVs). Different rates apply and these are available on our website or by asking CityFleet. If you wish to know the fare you can ask at the point of booking, either by phone, online or via the App. If you hail a taxi from a rank or in the street the driver can tell you how much your journey will cost. If the metered fare is less than the maximum fare shown in the table, your contribution will be based on the lower amount (the metered fare).

The Taxicard subsidy is funded jointly by Transport for London (TfL) and the London boroughs. If your borough allows double-swiping (two subsidies in one trip) you can decide if and when you wish to use it.

If you need taxi in London Wandswort or Balham, Guildford, Bracknell, Bracknell Executive  or airport transfers, Ascot, Maidenhead, Morden, Wimbledon, Rayners Park, Harrow, Amersham, Hayes or  Colindale!
